Alexandra Levit's Water Cooler Wisdom Let's End the Collective Death by Conference Call According to new InterCall research on workplace conference call behavior, 82 percent of employees admitted to focusing on other work or non-work distractions while on a call. Rob Bellmar, executive vice president of conferencing and collaboration atInterCall, recently offered some great tips toHarvard Business Reviewabout ending conference call abuse. Here are his highlights. Stop striving for inclusiveness Online calendars, scheduling apps and email distribution lists have created a monstrous meeting invite reflex. It has become too easy to send blanket, one-hour meeting invites to 10 people when only five are relevant to the agenda. Businesses need to break free of the notion that all attendees should be on a conference call from start to finish. Rob advises that managers can stagger invitations and plan upfront which topics will be discussed at various points in the meeting. Start using video Video conferencing remains a point of contention, and its adoption curve is a matter of psychological acceptance. The idea that everyone in a meeting can watch what you’re doing deters many workers, as does the dissonance between what we see in the mirror and what’s reflected on our laptop or tablet screens. But Rob cites research fromWainhouse, which found that of the employees who use webcams andsimilar toolsduring meetings, 74 percent like the ability to see colleagues’ reactions to their ideas, and nearly 70 percent feel it increases connectedness between participants. Three cheers for women who say they dont want to work. At least theyre honest. One of my favorite twitter feeds is GSElevator. Its stuff people overhear in the Goldman Sachs elevator, and most of it features bad behavior that confirms it was better for me to marry a farmer than the bankers I dated before him. But sometimes there is a gem like this one:  The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence because its fertilized with bullshit. That is how I feel about women watching other women run their lives. I am constantly wondering about other peoples lives. Im fascinated by how we dont tell each other what sucks about our life. We dont tell our partners why we hate ourselves. We dont tell our friends why our marriage or our job sucks. Mostly, I have to get this information from the National Enquirer, which is one of the only places that people are honest about their lives. Not out of choice, of course. But because the honesty is worth so much money. Its not worth money to anyone if you tell the truth. Its worth a lot to you, of courseits very freeing to be honest about everything. Believe me, the criticism I got for staying with my husband after he bruised me in a fight was a small price to pay for coming clean about our problems at the time. So here are some things I know:  Giselle  says she earns millions of dollars a year (posing for photos like the one up top to promote breastfeeding) but she doesnt spend any of her earnings on her household. Instead, her husband,Tom Brady, pays for everything because Giselle wants to feel taken care of. I get it. And I like that she admits that. Most women want to be taken care of. Its just not possible. I want to be taken care of. Sure, Id still do this blog and Id still do interesting things. But Id like having money pouring in from a source that is not me. Its the ultimate career luxury, right? Heres another thing I read in the Enquirer:  Jennifer Lawrence said she is getting ready to stop doing movies so she can have kids. She said shes much more interested in having a family than a career. This is, of course, a luxury she can have because she had a career early. Shes 23 years old and she already won an Oscar. And shes not an aberration in Hollywood. Mila Kunis  said shed rather have a great marriage and a couple of kids than make a movie. I love how she poses it as a dichotomy. Because shes just being honest: You cant have a great marriage and be a great parent and have a huge career. You know that. Its just very few people will come out and say that to you. Some people will tell you that such an admission is a throwback to the 1950s and its discouraging. Thats true. Except for one thing: divorce law protects women today. In the 1950s, if you allowed a guy to take care of you, if you put your career aside for kids, then there was no protection for you. So women went nuts fighting for rights, fighting for jobs, fighting for an equal right to a piece of the pie. But now women are guaranteed money to raise the kids, whether the guy stays or not. So now that we have laws that protect kids, why do we need to choose a job over family? We can get a divorce settlement that ensures we have money. Okay, so its not a ton of money, but if you didnt want to work when you were married, you probably dont want to work when youre single with kids, and divorce law ensures that you can pay for your kids while youre single.  (And now, for the best link ever on this topic:  YungSnuggies comment  about women being assured money for raising the kids. Scroll down the page his comment is yellow.) I know, there are exceptions. But  most women want to cut back work to be home with kids. And most women want to put family before career. But very few women are brave enough to say that out loud. Maybe the biggest problem in this scenario is that while cutting back work to spend time with kids presupposes you have a career you like. Which is pretty hard to pull together by your late 20s, when its time to start having kids. The pressure on women to have a big career before kids is extreme and something men do not experience. Most women want to have kids when they are 30, most women want to have a career when they are 30, and if they dont have a career, they dont have one to cut back on. Which means there are a lot of women who simply dont want to work. They have either proven themselves at work, or they didnt find work they love. In either case, work is not important enough pull to them to leave the kids in daycare. Lets stop taking pot shots at women who dont want to work. Lets start respecting people who get an advanced degree and then dont use it. Do we ask people to commit to staying home eight hours a day with kids to justify having a family? Then why do we want people to work eight hours outside the home in order to justify getting a good education? What I would like is for all the women to come out of the woodwork and start speaking like they are in the National Enquirer. I want the women who are breadwinners to confess if they wish they werent. Because every anonymous study in the world shows the vast majority  dont want to be breadwinners. And I want the women who love being breadwinners to tell everyone some statistics: Number of nannies. Total cost per year for childcare. Number of dinners per week with the kids. Number of childrens books you have memorized from reading aloud to kids so often. So I will lead the way. When I had a startup and two young kids in 2009 I had two full-time nannies that cost a total of $110K a year. Anyone needs that if they have a job where they travel and they have a spouse who does not want to be at their beck and call. I ate four times a week with my kids. I memorized about 50 childrens books. Which you might think shows that I was snuggled on the sofa reading with my kids all the time, but it really shows how easy it is to give misleading statistics.

How to Figure Out What Business to Start . 1.Write down all of your interests. Your interests are the things in your life that you have enjoyed since you were a child. They dont go away. For me, when I was a child and a teenager I loved helping and mentoring people. I was the go-to person that my friends would come ask me questions about dating or getting into college. Do this self-reflection and know what you are interested in before you take the next step forward. 2. Cross out interests you dont love enough to start a business in. Maybe you are an artist but that is more like a hobby and you might not want to start a business with it. You have to determine if your passion is something you love enough to do all day  or if its something you want to keep as just a hobby. 3. Talk with other people. Even though you arent doing networking to find a job. networking needs to be on the forefront of your tasks as a soon-to-be entrepreneur. Having a supportive network is so important for your future success. I have a mastermind group, a business coach and networking group I am very active in. Its so important to surround yourself with people who are like-minded and supporting you.  Its also important to get feedback from others about your ideas. Other people can help you get even further direction on what business to start. 4. Create a Pros and Cons List Take all of your ideas so far for your businesses from the above steps. You should have now narrowed them down and crossed them off after talking to so many people. Now its time to  create a list of pros and cons for the business ideas that are still remaining.  This will help you see the positives and the negatives of each remaining idea. 5. Pick a horse and ride it. Lisa Sasevich Its time. Stop thinking and start doing. Pick a direction. Dont spend anymore time wavering. Its really important that you make a decision and you run with it. If you never start taking action going towards something, youll never get anywhere.  Its ok to make changes as you build your business. You will realize that things arent final for you and your motivations can change as well throughout your life. But, the  most important thing for you today is to make a decision. While growing my  business over the last 6 years, I have had a lot of ideas. Some good and some bad. But, if I never would have started a blog, started taking clients or started creating courses, then I never would be where I am now. My business has completely changed from when I started and that is 100% ok. P.S. Here are some additional requirements when picking what business to start: 1. You must pick a problem and solve it. Its not enough just to have passion for it. You also have to find a problem associated with that passion to solve it. I had a strong passion for helping people with their careers so I was able to find the problem of women stuck in their careers and then actually figure out how to solve it. That is what has made my business thrive and get results for the women that take my courses. Its proven and it works. 2. Remember your ideal workday. I want you to create a business that matches your ideal workday when you are considering what business to start. Often  once you get started in your business, things move fast and all of a sudden you arent the boss, your calendar is.  Your schedule is driving you and you are too busy to do the things you always wanted to. As you plan out your business right now, remember what your ideal workday is. Do you want flexibility or a big team? Do you only want to work 3 days a week? As a business owner, your schedule can be planned however you want it to be. 3. Make sure you create an asset, not a liability. You want money going into your pocket, not money going out. Think about your cash flow and think of how you can create positive value for your checking account, rather than creating a liability. Been Harshly Criticized Lately What To Do When Others Try to Make You Wrong This week, several friends and clients have mentioned to me that they’ve been severely criticized for their views and standpoints.     Anyone who has stood up for something they believe in and been attacked for it knows it’s challenging at best, devastating at worst.   What should you do if you’ve been harshly demeaned or criticized for your thoughts and views?   Here are five tips that have helped me tremendously as an author, speaker, and women’s advocate, to weather the storm of criticism, and come out on the other side feeling whole and confident:   1)             Remember, what people say is more about them than you I learned in my therapy training that what comes out of someone’s mouth is more about them than you.   Much more.   Their views and words represent (and project) their years of cultural training, experience, upbringing, traumas, lessons, and biases (as well as their insights and wisdom based on their unique filter and history).   So remember that each individual has a custom-tailored view of life that may or may not fit your own.   It doesn’t have to.   2)             People who attack you are coming from a deeply fearful place When someone attacks you verbally, they are coming from a deeply insecure and frightened place.   They’ve been rocked by what you’ve said and done, and feel they need to put you down.   Take a look at what you’ve said (and how you’ve said it) that may have instigated a defensive stance from someone else.   But remember that you don’t have to own how they respond to you.   3)             When someone wants to make you wrong for your beliefs, they often feel threatened by your out-of-the box thinking I’ve noticed that when I present thinking that is different from the status-quo, it can lead to a harsh challenge.   Presenting views that ask others to question how things have been done for years, or shed light on trends or behaviors that need to be critically examined and revised, can ruffle people’s feathers.   They feel threatened that you want to expose something they’d prefer to remain hidden.   So be it.   But don’t let that stop you.   4)             Narcissists in our world abound Narcissism is rampant in our society (those of you who live and work with one know what I mean!).   A narcissistic individual can’t tolerate being challenged, and needs to make you wrong if you disagree with them.   They’ll go to tremendous lengths to “prove” they are right (and superior).   If you have a narcissist in your life or work, you feel you can’t express yourself without being punished.   Pay attention to those who harshly criticize you for your different views â€" if they have narcissistic tendencies, realize that you can’t win with them.   Don’t engage, as it will prove only a lose/lose endeavor.   Just protect (and extract) yourself best you can from their harmful way of thinking and behaving.   5)             Finally, use it as a growth opportunity   Stand up for what you believe in.   When others don’t agree with you, don’t doubt yourself and make yourself wrong.   Get connected to what you truly believe in, strengthen your boundaries, learn to deal effectively with rebukes, and remain steady in who you are and what you believe.     But at the same time, use this criticism for your own learning and growth.   If your words have been hurtful and diminishing to others, perhaps it’s time to look at what may be longing to be healed or addressed inside of you.   Reconnect to compassion, understanding, and inclusion in your thoughts and words (and in your relationship with yourself and others).   Our world needs much less judgment, criticism, and pain, and much more love, strength, compassion, inclusiveness, and respect.   If you’ve been criticized harshly, take some time to fully explore your part in it and what you can learn from it.   In the process, show compassion for yourself and others, grow from the lesson, accept that you (and everyone else) is doing the best they can…then move forward.

Ask the CHO Overwork - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Heres a question that came in an email on Sunday(!): Hi Alex, Ive just being surfing your website after typing in overwork in Google and found it most interesting. Im an environmental consultant working in a medium size risk management consultancy. Ive just been working on a report for a client on Sunday while my two kids and husband wait for me to finish. I am contracted to work 4 days per week but usually end up working 5-6 days. My company has an unstated policy of never ever saying no to work, no matter how small the job. We have won several large tenders lately which has resulted in massive increases in workload for everyone (I am currently on 216% of my target for the month). We deal with the clients ourselves (which is usually empowering) but if work isnt completed on time or of the quality they require then we get the nasty phone calls or emails. I am usually known in the company as having good client relationships and lots of repeat business but I dont answer the phone anymore. Sorry for the sob story but could you offer any suggestions?
